Description
Hosted by the Port Washington Fire Department and Fire Medics. As part of an annual statewide initiative, the Port Washington Fire Department will open its doors to area residents to showcase what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter or fire medic in the community.
In recent years, volunteer fire departments across New York State have faced significant challenges, with many experiencing decreased membership alongside increased call volumes. Like most volunteer departments, the Port Washington Fire Department and Fire Medics are seeking to strengthen their ranks to ensure they can continue providing the highest level of protection to local residents.
This event is intended not only to highlight the rewards and responsibilities of serving as a volunteer firefighter or fire medic, but also to raise awareness about the urgent need for new members.
Throughout the day, visitors will have the opportunity to:
- Tour the Flower Hill Hose Company firehouse
- Explore firefighter and fire medic apparatus
- Try on firefighter gear
- Participate in hands-on activities and demonstrations
- Learn about membership requirements and opportunities
“All are welcome to join us,” said Chief Donald Reese. “This is an excellent opportunity for residents to meet their local volunteer firefighters and fire medics, and to learn more about the fire service. Volunteer firefighters and fire medics are everyday heroes who dedicate their spare time to helping others in times of need. We are always looking for new members, and it is our hope that after seeing the camaraderie of the Port Washington FD and Fire Medics firsthand, more people will be inspired to become part of our family.”
